TV Thursday- One of My Favorite Shows: Fringe

I just wanted to focus this week on one of my favorite TV shows at present and that is Fringe on Fox. I know this show isn't for everyone's taste, unless you are a big fan of the paranormal and mystery together genre...like X-files, etc. So I thought I'd share my thoughts on this great show.

The pilot episode introduces us to Special Agent Olivia Dunham who lands a case where an entire plane load of people are killed without crashing. We learn her partner/lover may be a traitor and somehow involved. Basically, we learn there is a sinister group in the world experimenting on the world. In order to make sense of what's happening and the science involved they turn to Dr. Walter Bishop, a man who's been in the insane asylum for twenty years. Joining them is his genius son Peter to help keep him from going completely bonkers. Dr. Bishop worked for the government on secret experiments called fringe science, thus the name.

The three characters work so well together along with the few other semi-regulars. I love Olivia's character...she's tough yet caring and she doesn't worry about having her hair curled and beautified every day nor tons of makeup. It's really refreshing to have a female character like that on TV. She's beautiful because of who she is, not because of what she looks like.

It's a wonderful combination of paranormal, conspiracy-theory nuttiness that I just love! The first season is on DVD! So check it out if haven't yet.

TV Thursday- Shows That Don't Make Sense

Well, I have been hearing so much about Lost over the last few years I thought I'd start catching up since it's in its final season. Hulu.com has all five seasons available and the ones that have aired in season six. I've made it up to episode 10...I think I can see where the hype comes from...it's like a way better produced soap opera. They don't really tell you anything and just keep adding on mysteries so you're always hoping there's an answer right around the next episode and nothing.

So what is it? Are they aliens? Government conspiracy? Scientific experiment with time travel gone cock-eye? The Fates?

And I love how even though these people are surviving for their lives the women still look like their hair is somewhat done and no one ever looks sunburned and too skinny. Even the women have make up on all the time!

So for me this show just doesn't make sense. Do you have a show that just never made sense to you? I'd love to hear about it!

TV Thursday- Reality TV

I've been watching The Biggest Loser this year, my first year of actually watching this show, and it got me thinking about reality TV. I'm not a huge fan...I don't watch Survivor or any of the dating shows. The only ones I really love are the aforementioned and The Amazing Race. They seem more real to me, though, I know reality TV is never really real....like with Survivor...really? They have camera crews everywhere and a medical helicopter to whisk them away should anything really serious happen. I guess it's about human drama that draws us in. Overall, not a hug fan except for these two.

And ones like The Bachelor are just so ridiculous and degrading to all involved, in my opinion. At least non reality TV doesn't make a claim to be realistic. So thus my displeasure with most of reality TV.

TV Thursday- TV on DVD

What TV shows do you own? Are there any shows that aren't on DVD yet that you want?

I think TV on DVD is the greatest thing since sliced bread! I'm slowly gathering my favorite shows of old and new onto my DVD shelf!!!

I have all of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the X-Files. I really want all of the Star Trek and its respective spin-offs eventually. I am collecting as I go...Bones, Fringe, House, Medium, and Numbers...

I just never imagined as a kid I would one day be able to own those special shows on DVD! Yes, definitely the greatest thing since sliced bread!

TV Thursday- Favorite Comedies

A weekly meme started by Trina and continued by me on anything TV related!

This week....Comedies aka Situational Comedies back in the day...What have been/are your favorite comedies?

I used to love comedies, but now...not so much...there's just too much stereotyping and vulgarity and not enough diversity for me to get into the stories...so  I don't have any favorites at this time. But when I was a kid I loved Punky Brewster, Silver Spoons, Mr. Belvedere, Who's the Boss?, and The Cosby Show...Still not a lot of diversity (except for The Cosby Show), but they were still heart-warming and didn't completely rely on sex jokes to make themselves funny. Then the 90s brought Seinfeld and Friends. Those were pretty funny for the most part. And now I hear How I Met Your Mother is pretty good and, of course, The Office, which is the only comedy I actually watch every now and again.

What do you think? Are comedies getting dumber or are they getting smarter? And once again, what are your faves?

TV Thursday

My weekly TV meme that's all about...TV!

This week is all about series finales. USA's show Monk (2002-2009) just aired its final episode this week. I thought it was a great wrap-up to this incredibly smart and funny show. We finally learn who killed Trudy and why and its healing effect upon Mr. Monk. So it was a fantabulous series finale; it neatly tied up loose ends and made you feel all warm and fuzzy inside....so my thoughts are what TV shows ended really lame? What ones ended fantabulously like Monk?

For me? I hated how Quantum Leap (1989-1993) ended...it wrapped things up but in a very confusing and annoying way. Veronica Mars (2004-2007) had a great season finale episode! But a horrible end to the series...it got canceled and the creator Rob Thomas was hoping a season finale episode would persuade the bigwigs at top to renew the show for one more season...didn't happen. It's the most frustrating thing ever!!!!!

Most people probably won't agree with me, but I thought the series finale to Seinfeld (1990-1998) was superb! The selfish and whiny peeps finally got their just desserts! Though, it was a sad ending to a wonderful comedy era...

For some reason the series' that I love just haven't gotten their great final hurrahs. Oh well! I keep watching and hoping...

TV Thursday

My weekly meme all about TV!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Can I just say that show rocked! I finally purchased the final season a month or so ago and am having so much going through them again. What makes Buffy such a wonderful character? Well, first off she's tough. She can take care of herself physically, yeah! Second, she's not perfect. She's still a teenage girl trying to fit in and make sense of everything, so she needs people emotionally to be there for her and that's where her awesome friends come in. I love how, even though the show is fantasy (with vampires and all), there still is realism thrown in. Not everyone in Sunnydale looks like they're models heading to high school every morning/photo shoots...this is the big problem I have with the new Vampire Diaries TV show on right now. Willow's a nerd, too skinny, average-looking girl. Xander is a hottie who doesn't know it, but he's still average guy in high school. Yeah, the ones not as great-looking are of course the Not main character like Buffy, but hey, it's progress!

My favorite episodes that stand out are the ones where everyone loses the ability to speak and these creepy monster guys go around eating children or something...that one was hilarious and scary all at the same time. Then we have the musical episode in the sixth season! I think Giles was the only one who could actually sing really great...but it was just brilliant and fun at the same time.

This week's focus: Holiday Movies!

What is your favorite holiday movie? What is the one movie you just have to watch year after for the holiday season?

1. It's a Wonderful Life (1946): I know it's the old standby, but it's just beautiful and makes me cry every time and Jimmy Stewart is the best!

2. The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992): Personally, this is my favorite adaptation of the Dickens's beloved classic! It's so fun with the singing and the dynamic between Rizzo the Rat and Gonzo is just hilarious!

3. A Christmas Story (1983): My favorite lines "Shut up, Ralphie!" "He said the f--- word." "It's fragiiiilay, it must be Italian." A touching story on family and just how laugh out loud funny they can be!

4. Elf (2003): Will Farrell is so perfect for Elf! How can you not just love the sweet child-like innocence of a person like that! He really brings out the Christmas spirit for me! And it's just so darn funny.

These are the big four holiday movies that get watched every year in my family! I would love to hear your classics!

TV Thursdays- V

This week's topic is on the new ABC drama V. This new series is actually a remake of both the ABC miniseries and its subsequent TV series back in 1983-1985. I actually remember watching this one as a wee one...reruns! And I thought it was such a great and interesting concept. We have aliens visiting Earth and saying they come in peace and will exchange their technology for certain precious resources they need from our planet...thus they are called the Visitors aka V. But no, they do not come in peace, really, they want to eat us as food and perform experiments on us! Yikes...but they as saviors and they lull us into sweet and utter devotion. So on comes the resistors, the rebellions!

The new series is a wonderful reimagination of the original...better special effects, acting, etc. So it's a real treat and nail biter every week. Since I'm a big sci-fi junky this completely helps me get my fix! Nothing is as good as it seems and it's important to always check everything fully before you jump in!

Weekly Glee

Well, I just thought I'd start talking about the Fox show Glee. I get to watch Glee a day late since I have no cable, satellite, or plain old regular TV on the antenna so I get to watch via the Internet a day late! But that's OK, I don't complain.

• So far we Will Schuester volunteering to coach Glee Club since he was in Glee in his high school days.
• But all the kids are "losers" and it's "uncool" to join.
• Sue is the cheerleading coach and wants to bring Glee down since they're cutting into her "Cheerios" budget.
• Then we have the male star from the football team who supposedly knocked up his girlfriend, but actually didn't; it was his best friend from the football team who also joined Glee....
• We also have Will thinking his flighty, selfish and not so kind wife is with child...nope, she's faking it and wanting the baby from the football team's girlfriend to keep so she won't have to tell Will, and Will also has a crush on the high school counselor who's marrying the football coach to get over will oh and she's a germ freak like Monk!

So you throw all this into lots of great music in the Glee numbers and it's sort of a musical, actually and throw in some heart to characters that you didn't think had any! And voila, it's a masterpiece and can't wait for every new episode.

This week the principal ordered Sue to hold tryouts for a new member since she had just kicked off her start since she's pregnant...she let on a girl with Down Syndrome and Will started thinking she had some ulterior motive...something devious up her sleeve...since she even forked over some money to help Glee build a wheelchair ramp to the stage (Glee club has Artie...who's in a wheelchair). Flash forward a couple of scenes and we have Sue visiting her older sister who also has Down Syndrome and now we see a whole new side to Sue...I was crying like a baby, but in a good way. It was very touching and I really enjoy it when we see full character developments like this. It just makes everything seem more real and deep.

TV Thursday- Favorite Shows Getting Axed

TV Thursday is a meme where I share various topics on the wonderful land of TV and hope you join in the discussion!

There was a TV show last season called Life on NBC...it was cancelled at the end of the season after two years. Charlie Crews is pardoned after twelve years in prison for a crime he never committed. He is released with lots of settlement money and with his badge back on the LAPD. He's out to discover who set him up and why. Damian Lewis plays Det. Charlie Crews and he plays him with an American accent since he's actually British. The accent is flawless. So they're solving crimes while he's investigating his own case...it's fun and pretty intense. It ended on a great note, though, like they knew it was getting cancelled and therefore wrapped it up pretty nice. So if you haven't seen this show...rent it, borrow it, etc! You won't be disappointed!

A few years ago there was Invasion and Threshold that I absolutely adored and they got canned halfway through the season with huge cliffhangers.

Veronica Mars is another one that I just love...it only last three seasons and the end was not a great send off...grrrrr!

TV Thursday- Star Trek

I grew up on Star Trek! I'm a Trekkie, yes, I admit it! And I have loved all the spin-offs and most of the movies. My favorite spin-off is Star Trek: The Next Generation. Totally cheesy the first couple of seasons, but superb. Enterprise is my second favorite. It has Scott Bakula in it as Captain Archer!

OK, basically I'm saying if you haven't given Star Trek a try before you really ought to give it a go. The original series is super campy and fun and cheesy! But who can resist Captain Kirk's double-fisted battle blow or Dr. Bones saying "Damn it, Jim, I'm a doctor not a barber!" Or Spock saying illogical!

If you're a Trekkie what's your favorite? Why do you love Star Trek? Or if you're not a big Trekkie what's your favorite sci-fi show?

This is also in honor of the new Star Trek movie coming out on DVD in a couple of weeks! So excited!

TV Thursday- Present Favorites

TV Thursday is a meme that explores the wonderful world of television!

Last week I talked about my childhood favorites so this week I thought I would focus on my favorites right now that are not new this season.

1. Medium (2004): One who communicates with the deceased. Allison Dubois is that person (based on the life of the real Allison Dubois). She's a wife and mother of three and works for the Phoenix District Attorney's office helping them solve crimes. She never gets sleep since the deceased always haunt her dreams so she can give them rest. This isn't your typical crime show; it's a character-based show. We see her life as a mother and wife; we see her husband and how he deals with his wife seeing dead people and now possibly his daughters. It's just great family drama! Check it out on CBS Fridays.





2. Bones (2005): Based on the life of real forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs. We have Temperance Brennan working at the Smithsonian Institution and partnering up with an FBI agent, Agent Booth, along with her team of squints to solve crimes when the corpse no longer has flesh, only bones. Once again this a character driven drama with humor thrown in. David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel have amazing chemistry. Just be aware that the stuff they show is pretty real-looking...my mom gets queasy and my hubby sometimes. But if you can stomach it it's a great show! Check it out on Fox Thursdays.

TV Thursdays- Childhood Favorites

What were the TV shows that you just loved as a kid?

1. Care Bears (1985-1988)- I just loved the Care Bear stare! I'm also a sci-fi junkie and since they had some cool powers with their bellies...

2. Punky Brewster (1984-1988)- She was just sooo cool! And it was all so sad at the same, being abandoned by your mother with no family, but she sure knew how to turn tragedy into some fun and happy times. Plus the theme song was so catchy and happy!

3. Dungeons and Dragons (1983-1985)- All my nerdy brothers were into role-playing games and so they got me hooked! A bunch of kids get thrown into the world of Dungeons and Dragons as a fighter, barbarian, wizard, thief, etc! Throw in a unicorn and you got some fun stuff!

4. My Little Pony and Friends (1986-1987)- I loved the ponies! I got everything you could think of...My Little Pony Castle, Stable, etc! They rocked; lots of fond memories!

The theme is what have you been watching this week?

It was premiere week so I took in a lot of my regular shows and a couple of new ones as well.

I watched CSI and I wasn't disappointed. It started with everyone frozen in time at the CSI lab with people fighting and bullets flying! And I'm so glad Laurence Fishburne joined the cast...Morpheus, he really does know Kung Fu!

Fringe: I just can't get enough of this show. Anna Torv is brilliant in this as well as Joshua Jackson. We've got alternate universes, Leonard Nimoy, telepathy, conspiracies, etc!

Medium is my favorite! We ended last season with Allison in a coma after brain surgery. Would she have her medium super powers back? It was a great season opener and am excited for more!

I also tried Flash Forward. It was gripping! I'm hooked...I'm not sure how long they can hold onto it, where it will lead, but I'm willing to see! The entire world blacks out for 2 minutes and seventeen seconds and sees glimpses of their futures. What caused it or who and why?

And I took a gander at The Forgotten....let's just say it's already forgotten...

TV: The Vampire Diaries--More Vampire Lovin'!

Can I just say that this show is supernaturally wicked fun????!!!!! I haven't read the books yet, but they are on my list. I guess I just can't get enough of those bloodsuckers. It all started with Angel on Buffy the Vampire Slayer....I just love those bad guys trying to be good and messing up all the time. So now we have Stefan Salvatore, trying to pass as a high school student in order to be with the one he loves...Elena, and of course, trying really hard to not eat her and her friends!

So I'm wondering how he even knows she existed...I guess I'd have to read or wait for the series to unveil...plus the plot on IMDB says Elena is torn between two vampire brothers....from the looks of it Damon just wants to eat her and mess with his good-two shoes brother...so maybe he's a bit like Spike and falls for her despite his evilness!

I guess the only thing that bothers me is that all the high school girls look absolutely perfect...their hair, clothes, makeup, bodies are all just too done up...where are the regular people, the short and chubby or at least the not as pretty friend? In that sense it makes it a bit harder to relate to.

It's not my Buffy, but it's still great and entertaining vampire mayhem!

I'm all excited about the new show Glee! I love the music, the acting is great, and the story, well, it's just a little heart-warming. I love finding a show I can fall in love with. We need a few more heart-warming shows out there!

The story follows a bunch of misfit kids and their glee teacher trying to do what they love and that is sing and dance! The characters: The teacher, Will Shuester, who loves teaching and wants to bring back his glory days of his gleeing and of course, some marital problems with his wife; Rachel Barry, she has two dads and has been trained in dancing and singing since she was three months old; Finn Hudson, popular jock who also happens to love singing; Sue Sylvester, the cheer-leading coach, she hates all the glee kids and wants to run them out of the school; Emma Pillsbury, co-teacher who also happens to have a crush on Will; Chris Colfer, our gay Thespian; Kevin McHale, loves to dance in his wheelchair; along with a few other misfits, jocks, and cheerleaders! They all make for a great parody on high school life and theater arts!

I thought I would join in on this meme since I'm also a TV-junkie! Well, I don't actually have a TV signal coming into my home since we live in the boonies and are too cheap to get satellite! So I use the Internet for all my TV wants and needs.

Here's what I'm looking forward to this Fall:

Fringe: It's an X-Files show, yet still totally its own! It's creepy, weird, and oh so entertaining, without the alien conspiracies. It premieres (for its 2nd season) September 17th on Fox.

Numb3rs: Brainy math professor and his FBI brother team together to solve crimes! The family dynamic is great, stories are fresh, and its just fun! They left us with quite the cliff-hanger; it premieres (6th season) September 25th on CBS.

Medium: Crime-solving via dreams and the dead and leading a semi-normal life with the world's best husband and three beautiful daughters! Also quite the crazy cliff-hanger as it switches over from NBC to CBS. It starts its 6th season on September 25th.

Bones: A stuffy forensic anthropologist, her cronies, and FBI agent Booth team up for more heart-warming crime-fighting! Another scary cliff-hanger so I'm excited for season 5 to start up September 17th on Fox!

House: Cynical and mean Dr. House doesn't have any bed-side manner, which makes it great! Fascinating medical mysteries. Season 6 opens up with House in the looney bin! Airs September 21st on Fox.

Chuck: Just hilarious spoof-action comedy! Doesn't actually premiere till March 2010 on NBC.

Lie to Me: How to solve crimes by lie detection! I just love crime TV shows and this one adds a whole new dynamic! Love it! Premieres for its 2nd season September 28th on Fox.

New Shows I'm Looking Forward To:

The Good Wife: is a drama starring Emmy Award winner Julianna Margulies as a wife and mother who must assume full responsibility for her family and re-enter the workforce after her husband's very public sex and political corruption scandal lands him in jail. Love political dramas. Premieres September 22nd on CBS.

V: I loved the original series and I love aliens so this one's a no-brainer for me! Premieres November 3rd on ABC.

Stargate Universe: Loved the movie and the original SG-1 so am willing to try this one out. Premieres October 2nd on Sci-fi.

Vampire Diaries: Vampires and TV...Love it! Premieres September 10th on CW.

Mercy: Another hospital drama from the nurses' perspective. Premieres September 23rd on NBC.

Flash Forward: A mysterious global event causes everyone to black out simultaneously for two minutes and seventeen seconds, and each person sees a glimpse of their lives six months from now. When they wake up, everyone is left wondering if what they saw will actually happen. Sounds intriguing! Premieres September 24th on ABC.

Trauma: Medical drama from the perspective of First Response paramedics. I'm sketchy about medical dramas so we'll see... Premieres September 28th on NBC.

White Collar: Con artist and FBI agent team up! Premieres September 23rd on USA.

The Forgotten: Its Without a Trace, but with civilians instead. We'll see...Premieres September 22nd on ABC.

The Community: A comedy series about a band of misfits who attend Greendale Community College. At the center of the group is Jeff Winger (Joel McHale, "The Soup"), a fast-talkin' lawyer whose degree has been revoked. With some help from his fellow classmates, Winger forms a study group who eventually learn more about themselves than their course work. If it's smart and funny...Premieres September 17th on NBC.

Glee: A sneak preview aired last May and it was so hilarious! It officially airs September 4th on Fox.

It's a huge list so some will have to go by the wayside, but I love watching a new series to see how well it grabs me from the start!
