A Reading Life (6) and Pic a Day in December (1st)

A Reading Life...hosted by Michelle at The True Book Addict, and also inspired by Lisa at Lit and Life--Life: It Goes On...is a meme where we get to talk about other stuff we're doing in our lives along with reading!

Listening to:

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. A very interesting bit of fan fiction. All about how a genius, aka Harry, makes sense of the magical world of witches and wizards, using the methods of rationality. It's informative, funny, and a bit disturbing all rolled into one. So far there are 98 podcast posts so far and I'm only on 18 or so....

Books Finished:

The Physics of Christmas by Roger Highfield (for my skeptic book club) and You Are Not So Smart by David McRaney. I'll get these reviews up soon!

Reading:
  • Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
  • Paleofantasy: What Evolution Really Tells Us About Sex, Diet, and How We Live by Marlene Zuk

Coming Up:

I have a cookie exchange party this weekend! But....I decided I can't actually cook so I bought a bunch of peppermint bark from Costco instead! lol. Hopefully, no one will be too mad with my laziness. Their peppermint bark is heavenly, so I don't think anyone will complain too much!

I want to make this with devoted hubby and Gabe this week as well:

Watching:

The Blacklist with James Spader. He is amazing! He really carries that show. No offense to the other actors but they just don't have quite his panache.

Homeland. I'm halfway through the first season and I am loving it! All fabulous actors in that one.

Making:

I made some amazing chicken crockpot and potatoes dish for my after Thanksgiving Friendsgiving stravaganza!

I'll be making homemade ornaments and trying out some Christmas science experiments!

Grateful For:

A wonderful Thanksgiving weekend! We had a chill afternoon with my family up at my sister's place. Then we went to see a few friends and played Cards Against Humanity! (Best game ever, especially while tipsy ;))

The day after Thanksgiving we invited two sets of friends over and their kids and ate yummy pizza, ham and potatoes, chicken and potatoes, and whipped cheesecake, and sipped on yummy mulled wine and hard ciders while playing fantastic board games!

Looking Forward To:

Spending time with family and friends this month and trying out new recipes for drinks, breads, and soups! Watching holiday movies and singing cheesy holiday songs! It's a stressful but very rewarding month and look forward to it every year :)

Pictures:

This tree pic was my view from our couch. I'm trying to do a themed pic of the day all through December and December 1st is Your View Today:

The tree has been trimmed!
Our trimmed tree

Last hike before the cold and snow!
It's been relatively warm for the last couple of weeks so we took our last hike before it snows Tuesday!

  1. Have you seen the movie version of Practical Magic? It is one of my favorite movies. I'm afraid in its case, I prefer the movie over the book. I read the book a bit after seeing the film and while I enjoyed the book, I still loved the film more. I'd be interested to hear what you think.

I love your Christmas tree! Gorgeous! Is it real? We were going to get a real tree this year, but we're still living with my mom and she's a bit of a fuss budget about the needles so I just went with out smaller pre-lit tree. When I had a house, I used to put up two trees. A real one in the family room and my 4 ft. pre-lit in the library. Hopefully, the boys and I can continue this tradition when we're in our own place next year.

I too am thoroughly enjoying The Blacklist.

    Have a great week!

    1. I saw it when it first came out, but I don't remember how much I liked it or not! I think I'll try it again after I finish the book. I like the book but it's not my favorite so far.

Real. We got it from a local farm! I love big trees! Hope you can get your own place soon :)

Have a fabulous week too :)

  2. Sounds like you had a great holiday weekend. I'm very intrigued by whipped cheesecake and even more so by Christmas science experiments. Hope you share those!

    1. Whipped cheesecake. 8 oz of softened cream cheese. Beat till whipped. In a separate bowl whip 1/2 pint of real whipping cream until thick, add in about 1 cup of powdered sugar and a tsp or two of of vanilla or almond extract. Mix and then add the whipped cream to the whipped cream cheese. Pour into a graham cracker pie crust. Chill for a few hours and serve! Best cheesecake ever!

I will also share the experiments too. ;)

  3. Your day after Thanksgiving sounds perfect - I hope to get an invite one year ;)
I need some details one the fingerprint project. Is it an ornament, necklace?
Too funny on the tv viewing. We only started watching one new show this year (who has the time?) and it's Blacklist. Love James Spader. We have the first season of Homeland checked out from the library, hope to start this weekend. Love Damien Lewis.

    1. Yes, please come, Stacy!

The fingerprint project is an ornament but I'm sure you could do one fingerprint and make it a necklace! I have it pinned ;)

Love Damian too. His series Life was sooo good. I was sad when it only lasted two seasons.
